How we score

Metabolic — how we score

The Metabolic category is how NordicScan's method flags ingredients associated with metabolic effects — added sugars, sweeteners, emulsifiers, and ultra‑processing signals — and where it rewards a genuinely positive metabolic ingredient. It is one of the nine evidence categories behind a product's concern score. This page explains what the category looks at, the sources behind it, and what the score does and does not claim.

A flag in this category means an ingredient our method associates with metabolic effects is present — for your research. It is not a safety verdict, not an assessment of your metabolism, and not medical advice.

What this category looks at

  • Food (ingestion). Added sugars and syrups, non‑nutritive sweeteners, certain emulsifiers, and ultra‑processing signals, alongside the glucose, lipid, and weight‑related correlations reported for them.
  • Cosmetic. Usually a low‑weight category, unless an ingredient is genuinely metabolic‑active or there is material systemic exposure.

The positive side is real here. A strong, credible positive metabolic association can lift the score for an ingredient that is actually present in a declared, dose‑plausible, route‑relevant form — this is the legitimate case where positive evidence moves the number the same way a concern would. It is gated by a dose/legal‑form plausibility check, so trace or ornamental amounts earn nothing.

The evidence and sources we weight

Per the source hierarchy, this category weights regulator assessments of sugars, sweeteners, and additives (for example WHO guidance on free sugars and EFSA/FDA sweetener opinions) and the peer‑reviewed nutrition and metabolic literature. Each ingredient‑level flag cites the specific source behind it.

The words we use

Every statement is matched to its evidence tier:

  • A research finding is a correlation — "associated with higher glucose response", "associated with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes in cohort studies", or, on the positive side, "associated with a better lipid profile", named as an association.
  • A composition fact is a nutrition signal — "contains added sugar", stated factually.

We never present a metabolic correlation as proven causation, and we make no disease claim of any kind.

What the score does — and does not — claim

  • It does flag ingredients associated with metabolic effects, and does surface credible metabolic positives, so you can research both.
  • It does not assess your metabolic health, and does not make a medical claim about any metabolic condition.
  • A positive lift can never wash out an unresolved severe concern elsewhere in the product.
