How we score
How we score
NordicScan’s score is a simple way to compare products quickly. It’s not medical advice and it’s not a diagnosis. Wherever possible, NordicScan also shows the drivers behind results so you can understand the “why”.
Disclaimer: NordicScan provides informational insights only and is not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
Principles — what we optimize for
Clarity
A score that’s easy to understand at a glance—especially while shopping.
Evidence
When product data is incomplete, NordicScan can show “Can’t tell” rather than guessing.
Neutral tone
NordicScan avoids moral language (“good/bad”) and aims to support your own preferences.
Inputs — what can contribute to the score
Exact scoring details can vary by product category and available data. In general, NordicScan may consider signals like:
- Ingredients & additives — ingredient-level flags and concerns, plus positive attributes where applicable.
- Processing level — a NOVA‑aligned processing category (Level 1–4) and drivers when NordicScan has enough evidence. Processing is presented as a classification, not automatically a “negative”.
- Recalls & safety signals — when possible, NordicScan checks for recalled products and surfaces clear alerts.
What you’ll see alongside the score
- Key drivers — short, scannable explanations (for example: “flavors”, “emulsifier”, “modified starch”).
- Confidence and limitations — when data is missing, NordicScan can surface limitations so you know what’s known vs unknown.
- Filters and tags — search and filter products using 120+ tags across diet, sensitivities, additives, and more.
Reminder: Lower processing ≠ “healthy”.
Processing level is one dimension. Nutrition needs, portion sizes, and individual sensitivities still matter.
